The purpose of having The Purge is for the 12 hours your allotted to do whatever,it is so people can get rid of all negative emotions and rage built up inside. The idea is that humans as a race are a violent species, and by getting all your anger and rage out, you will be a better more relaxed person through out the rest of the year. The only rules of The Purge is that "Level 10" government officials must remain unharmed and usage of weaponry above "Class 4" is forbidden.
The bases of this movie is in the house of the Sandins'. While they don't participate in The Purge, they still watch it and believe in the good it does. When the 12 hours of freedom are start, they lock there home down in with an advanced security system that locks down the doors and windows with huge concert walls. The Sandin's son does not understand why The Purge has to happen and is against it. As the family is doing there normal routine to get the night over with, the Sandin's son, Charlie, hears a man outside yelling for help. Charlie turns off the family's security system and lets the man into the house.
This is the basics of the movie. Shortly after a group of college aged kids come to the door demanding they return the man for he was there prey for the night. If they don't give up the man in a certain amount of time, they would come in and kill everyone in the house. Now the family has to choose, the life of this stranger in there home, or the life of everyone in the house.
The Purge brought me back to a time when you can see a horror thriller with out having the whole movie be bloody and gory. Now don't get me wrong, I love me a good old bloody/gory movie. But remember when you could watch a thriller and be on the edge of your seat, or get a couple good scars that make you jump? Well The Purge does just that. It will give you a couple great scars and keep you on the edge of your seat. Rhys Wakefield who played the leader of the college kids deserves an award for his performance. I suggest checking out The Purge if your into a good thriller with some twist!
