NINTENDO THEMED SHASTA SODA

In the late 80's and early 90's in the mist of the the NES's success, Nintendo did a lot of different things to promote and advertise there video games and characters. One of the ways the did that is by teaming up with the soda making company called Shasta. They came up with four different flavors in 8 oz cans that featured four different characters from the Mario Brothers universe. You could also have a chance to win Nintendo prizes from the cans. They were out for a limited time, but very much missed by fans that grew up with the original Nintendo.

The four characters chosen to be on the cans are Mario, Luigi, Princess Toadstool, and Yoshi. Each character had a different flavor. Mario's was fruit punch and came in a red can called Mario Punch. Luigi's flavor was berry and was in blue can called Luigi Berry. If I remember right it was a blue berry flavor, that is why the can was blue. Don't make much sense since Luigi wears green.Princess Toadstool had a cherry flavor in a pink can called Princess Toadstool Cherry. Yoshi's flavor was apple in a green can called Yoshi Apple.

The cans were only 8 oz cause they were trying to market them to kids. And even thought they don't have the Mario themed soda cans anymore, Shasta still do have the flavors. I remember going to the grocery store as a kid with my mom and rushing straight over to the soda section asking if we could buy some of the Mario soda. It's a shame they don't still make them in the Nintendo themed cans. You also don't really see themed ideas like this anymore. I know they have a Mario Brothers theme energy drink, but there not the same as the themed ideas of the past.

  6. I bought all four cans back in 1991 when I was 7th grade. I saved them and still have all four in awesome condition! They were never opened, but sat on my bedroom shelf for years. I stored them away in 1998 and wrapped them in tissue for years. I finally unwrapped them in 2012 and saw the Mario Punch and Luigi Berry were still full, the Princess Toadstool Cherry had leaked out of the unopened can lid and still had a third left in it, and the Yoshi Apple was empty and had leaked into the tissue. All four cans are still unopened and I still have these almost 30 years after I bought them! Crazy!!
